## Description

Air cargo through Cheddi Jagan International (GEO/SYCJ) climbed from roughly 7,660 tonnes in 2020 to about 14,430 tonnes in 2025, an 88 percent rise that tracks Guyana's offshore oil expansion almost exactly. Passenger numbers moved the same way, reaching 826,000 in 2024, up 17 percent year on year, at an airport sitting some 40 kilometres south of Georgetown at Timehri on the Demerara River. Most freight still travels as belly cargo on Caribbean Airlines, Surinam Airways and US carrier services, but dedicated capacity is arriving: United Cargo opened its own station in September 2024, served four times weekly from Houston on a Boeing 737 MAX 8, and Avianca Cargo flew its first freighter into Guyana in March 2026. Oilfield equipment, spare parts, project cargo and perishables dominate the traffic mix, and customs clearance for those flows runs through this airport. Ground was broken on 25 August 2025 for a new 150,000 square foot arrivals terminal, built by BHM Construction with Manchester Airports Group and due in 2028. Domestic and regional feeder flights use Eugene F. Correia International (OGL) closer to the capital, while Piarco in Trinidad (POS) and Paramaribo (PBM) serve as alternative gateways when capacity out of GEO is tight.
