## Description

Founded in 1984 to link the Chatham Islands with mainland New Zealand, Air Chathams turned this remote airfield some 800 kilometres east of the main islands into a working air bridge. Freight matters as much as passengers here: the airline flies out high-value live seafood — rock lobster, blue cod, kina and pāua — for the local fishery. During the crayfish season a dedicated freighter supplements the ATR aircraft to move live export catch. Inbound flights carry food, medicines and mail, making the service a genuine lifeline for residents. The route network reaches Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Volumes are modest, but for the island economy this cargo link is essential.
