## Description

3,952,126 passengers and 26,502 aircraft movements in 2024, up 8.3 per cent — Chania Ioannis Daskalogiannis Airport (CHQ, LGSA) is Greece's sixth-busiest airport and the main gateway to western Crete, but the figures describe a holiday airport rather than a freight one. Owned by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority and operated under concession by Fraport Greece, the field sits on the Akrotiri peninsula some 14 kilometres from the city of Chania and shares its runway with the Souda Bay naval and air base. No dedicated freighter services operate here; cargo travels as belly capacity on Aegean, Ryanair and the many seasonal carriers, with the capacity squeeze that summer peaks imply. Larger or time-critical consignments for western Crete are therefore routed through Heraklion (HER) about 130 kilometres east, the island's stronger cargo gateway, or directly through Athens (ATH). For general cargo and full loads the ferry link remains decisive: the port of Souda, immediately south of the airport, connects western Crete with Piraeus. As an EU location, shipments from within the single market need no customs clearance, while third-country goods are normally cleared in Heraklion or Athens.
