Bananas dominate trade around Changuinola, yet not a single stem leaves the region through its airport: Changuinola «Capitán Manuel Niño» International (CHX, MPCH) is a regional field with no cargo terminal and no freighter handling. It lies six kilometres inland from the Caribbean coast and about ten kilometres east of the Costa Rican border, in Bocas del Toro province. The strip began in the mid-20th century as a private airstrip of the Chiriquí Land Company, a United Fruit Company subsidiary; hangars of Bocas Fruit Co. and of the aerial-spraying operator ATOPAN still stand beside the terminal today. Scheduled service is provided solely by Air Panama to Panama City, flown with small aircraft, which keeps weight and volume limits tight for courier and accompanied goods. Banana exports continue to move by sea through the nearby port of Almirante. International air freight is handled at Tocumen International (PTY) near Panama City, where customs clearance and freighter capacity are available, while San José (SJO) across the Costa Rican border is a further option for perishables.
