## Description

A 3,860-metre runway built for military strategy has spent recent years handling parcels from Chinese webshops: Châlons-Vatry (IATA XCR, ICAO LFOK) in the Marne department of France moved 11,000 tonnes of air freight in both 2024 and 2025, far below the 150,000 tonnes the site was designed for. Located roughly 100 km east of Paris, it is one of the few French airports open to freighters 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which suits charters, perishables and last-minute capacity. In January and February 2026 the airport ran 16 cargo flights a week and about 4,000 tonnes combined, with some 90 percent of that volume originating from platforms such as Shein, Temu and AliExpress. When the French levy on low-value parcels took effect, March 2026 volume fell to roughly 800 tonnes, a reminder of how narrow the traffic base is. Operator XCR Airport, which reported EUR 7 million in revenue for 2025 and received a EUR 1 million subsidy in 2026, is nonetheless expanding its cargo facilities and has attracted logistics companies including Ninatrans to the site. Shippers gain available slots and short handling distances, but scheduled connectivity is thin, so Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) remains the gateway for line-haul freight and Liège (LGG) the usual alternative for e-commerce charters. All hinterland movement is by road, via the A26 and A4 motorways towards Paris, Reims and the Benelux corridors.
