Laid out in 1935 and today spread over roughly 120 hectares across the communes of Champforgeuil, Farges-lès-Chalon and Fragnes-La Loyère, Chalon-Champforgeuil airfield (ICAO LFLH) is the air access point for the Grand Chalon area of southern Burgundy. EDEIS has held the operating concession since 2017; the field is open to national commercial traffic, private aircraft and both IFR and VFR operations, with fuelling and handling available on site. Users are business aviation, medical and air-ambulance flights, and sport flying including parachuting - there is no cargo terminal, no customs post and no air freight handling agent. Shipments from the Chalon-sur-Saône economic area, built on metalworking, plastics and the wine trade, therefore travel by truck along the A6 motorway to Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (LYS), some 150 kilometres south and the leading cargo airport of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Paris-bound traffic uses Roissy-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), while flows toward Switzerland and southern Germany go via Basel-Mulhouse (BSL/MLH); Dijon-Bourgogne (DIJ), about 70 kilometres north, is the nearest larger field. The Saône waterway and the Le Creusot TGV station complement road access for multimodal moves.
