## Description

A 1,925 by 25 metre asphalt runway at 2,591 metres above sea level: technically Chachoan (ATF) near Ambato could take traffic, but scheduled service has been dormant for years. The field lies some six kilometres northeast of the capital of Tungurahua province, and reactivation for domestic flights is discussed periodically without being implemented. In March 2025 the Ecuadorian Air Force resumed De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter operations after assessing the runway, which keeps the site usable militarily but does not make it a freight location - there is no cargo terminal, no customs post and no handling agent. Air freight for the central Andes therefore moves through Quito Mariscal Sucre (UIO), Ecuador's principal export airport for cut flowers and perishables, roughly 130 road kilometres north, while Guayaquil (GYE) serves coastal and seaport-linked flows. Latacunga (LTX), about 40 kilometres north, is the nearest alternate field. For shippers in Ambato that means road pre-carriage along the Panamericana and customs clearance in Quito, with no shortcut via ATF.
