## Description

The Slovenian Armed Forces run Cerklje ob Krki (ICAO LJCE) as the country's only military airfield, a NATO-integrated base laid out in 1938 near the Croatian border on the Sava. Modernisation had absorbed some EUR 72 million by 2023, of which NATO funded EUR 41 million and Slovenia EUR 31 million, paying for runway resurfacing, hangars, a fuel depot and a control tower. A second phase begun in 2020 — refuelling systems, off-site fuel storage, a road link to the Drnovo II bypass and military logistics facilities — is costed at EUR 33.2 million and scheduled for completion in 2028 or 2029. No scheduled passenger or freight flights operate here; although the works follow civil as well as military standards, commercial service has no confirmed date. Air cargo for the region is booked through Ljubljana (LJU), a little over 100 road kilometres away, or Zagreb (ZAG), roughly 50 km across the border, where customs clearance is handled. Both lie within comfortable trucking range of the Posavje industrial area via the A2 motorway, so road feeder service remains the realistic answer.
