## Description

One 1,831-metre paved runway, six grass strips and a helipad make up Celle Army Airfield (ZCN/ETHC) in Lower Saxony, a German Bundeswehr installation rather than a commercial airport. The site is used mainly to train air-mobile infantry and for tactical helicopter crew training, and since 2002 it has formed part of the network around the International Helicopter Training Centre whose main base is at Bückeburg. Civil scheduled, charter and cargo flights are not permitted, and the field has no cargo terminal, no ground handling agent and no customs facility for air freight. Air cargo demand from the Celle area, which hosts mechanical engineering and a long-established oil and gas drilling technology cluster, is served through Hannover Airport (HAJ) about 50 kilometres to the south-west, reached via the A7 motorway and the B3 trunk road. Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) is the practical choice for express and integrator traffic, Frankfurt (FRA) for intercontinental freighter capacity, and Hamburg (HAM) adds proximity to the North Sea ports for sea-air combinations.
