## Description

Cayenne–Félix Eboué is a curious thing: a European Union airport on the South American mainland, full of long-haul widebodies yet without a freighter line of its own. Located at Matoury about 13 km from the capital Cayenne, it is French Guiana's principal airport, and 2025 brought a record 540,000 passengers, pushing capacity to its limit. That is why an 85-million-euro modernisation programme broke ground on 8 July 2026, led by Egis and operator SCAC: over 42 months, without interrupting air traffic, the terminal will grow by more than 1,000 m², passenger flows will be streamlined and apron areas renovated, with a long-term target of 90 percent decarbonised energy on site. As an overseas département, the territory sits inside the EU customs union but outside its VAT zone, with clearance run by French customs (Douane). Air France and Air Caraïbes link it to Paris and the Caribbean with widebodies, while Air Guyane Express serves the interior. Air cargo is almost entirely belly freight on those long-haul flights — inbound consumer and capital goods from metropolitan France dominate, with modest local exports. Heavy launcher hardware and satellite propellant for the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou still arrive by sea via Pariacabo. With no freighter services of its own, Paris remains the reference point for consolidated air freight.
