## Description

Named in 1965 after the Irish nationalist Roger Casement, the aerodrome at Baldonnel (ICAO: EIME; no IATA code) south-west of Dublin remains the sole military airfield in Ireland and the home of both the Irish Air Corps and the Garda Air Support Unit. In October 2025 the Air Corps took delivery of the third and final Airbus C295 under a roughly EUR 300 million programme, two configured for maritime patrol and one as a transport aircraft. No civilian scheduled or cargo operation takes place here: there is no freight terminal, no handling agent and no customs post for air cargo, and the field is not cargo-capable. Proposals to open Baldonnel to civil traffic resurface periodically — most recently in early 2026 — but have never been approved, with objections centring on whether Dublin needs a second airport and on environmental impact. A EUR 120 million expansion plan announced in late October 2025 is intended to house the growing fleet. Commercial air freight for the Dublin region moves through Dublin Airport (DUB), about 20 km to the north-east, with Shannon (SNN) as the western alternative for widebody freighters.
