## Description

Chile's second-busiest passenger airport is a minor air freight point: Carriel Sur (IATA: CCP, ICAO: SCIE) handled 80.6 tonnes of cargo in January and February 2025, up 1.0 per cent year on year, against 378,791 passengers over the same two months. The field lies at Talcahuano, about five kilometres north-west of Concepción, serving the industrial Biobío region. Freight travels almost entirely as belly cargo on domestic services to Santiago; no regular freighter operation is documented. Biobío's pulp, sawn timber, fishmeal and farmed salmon leave instead through the neighbouring seaports of Talcahuano, San Vicente, Lirquén and Coronel, all within half an hour by road. CCP is an international airport with customs and border control and acts as the country's principal weather alternate when Santiago (SCL) closes. Intercontinental air freight is consolidated at Santiago, roughly six hours away by truck on Ruta 5.
