## Description

Uruguay runs almost all of its air cargo through one operator, and that operator sits at Carrasco. The Terminal de Cargas del Uruguay (TCU) handles close to 100 percent of the country's inbound and outbound airfreight, working around the clock with a staff of more than 300. Carrasco, in Ciudad de la Costa just outside Montevideo, is the nation's only major intercontinental airport, run by Puerta del Sur (Corporación América) in a terminal designed by Rafael Viñoly that opened in 2009. What sets the cargo side apart is the MVD Free Airport regime, described by its operator as the only multimodal airport free zone in Latin America: goods can arrive by air, sea or road, be stored duty-free and undergo value-added work less than 200 metres from the apron. Pharmaceuticals move under GDP-compliant conditions, making Montevideo a redistribution base toward Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. The Port of Montevideo, some 20 kilometres away, supports genuine sea-air routings, while the Ruta Interbalnearia carries truck traffic; there is no meaningful rail link. On the passenger side Carrasco serves roughly two million travellers a year, with links to Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Panama City and Madrid. The airport honours Cesáreo L. Berisso, a pioneer of Uruguayan aviation.
