## Description

Just over 8,000 passengers used Carlisle Lake District Airport (IATA: CAX, ICAO: EGNC) in 2019, its only full year of scheduled service, and no airline has flown a timetabled route from Cumbria since Loganair withdrew its Belfast City, Dublin and London Southend links in March 2020. The field at Crosby-on-Eden, on the northern edge of the Lake District, now handles general aviation, charter and flight training. Ownership passed in 2024 to A W Jenkinson, a bulk haulage and forestry logistics group that has pledged around GBP 5 million of investment, but no freighter operation had been announced as of autumn 2026. The Air Freight Distribution Centre completed on the south-eastern corner of the site in 2015 is a road-based warehousing facility rather than an air cargo terminal, and the airport is not cargo-capable. Manchester (MAN), roughly 150 km south, is the nearest true air freight gateway for north-west England, with Newcastle (NCL) a similar distance east along the A69 trucking corridor. Customs clearance takes place at those gateways, not at Carlisle.
