## Description

European Cargo bases Airbus A340-600 freighters at Cardiff Airport (CWL/EGFF) and has flown a cargo service to Ürümqi in China since 16 October 2024, starting at three and building towards four rotations a week with payloads of roughly 70 to 76 tonnes. That operation lifted throughput to 1,893 tonnes in 2025 according to Welsh Government statistics, the highest in a decade and up from 1,829 tonnes in 2024. Wales' only international airport, at Rhoose south-west of the capital, also handled around 954,000 passengers in 2025. Ground handling passed to Swissport in 2024, which has invested in temperature-controlled facilities for pharmaceuticals and high-value goods, and customs clearance is available on site. Passenger capacity comes from Ryanair, TUI and Vueling into Europe plus Loganair and CityJet on domestic routes, while an announced WestJet link to Toronto would add belly capacity towards North America. The M4 motorway puts Cardiff, Newport and the South Wales industrial belt within minutes by truck and Bristol just over an hour away. For outsize or frequency-critical consignments Bristol (BRS) and above all London Heathrow (LHR) remain the complement, but for Welsh exporters CWL is the shortest air cargo route out.
