## Description

Roughly midway between the Andamans and Great Nicobar, Car Nicobar Air Force Station (CBD/VOCX) is an Indian Air Force base closed to commercial passenger and freight traffic. The station was almost entirely destroyed by the December 2004 tsunami, which killed more than a hundred air force personnel and family members, and was rebuilt afterwards. Resident units include No. 122 Helicopter Flight with Mi-8 helicopters, Dornier liaison aircraft and an air defence element. On 2 January 2026 the resurfaced and strengthened runway was inaugurated by India's Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan; the upgrade is explicitly dual-use and could in time support civil links under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-UDAN) as well as relief and evacuation flights. No cargo terminal, customs post or air cargo handling agent operates here. Air freight for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is therefore routed through Port Blair (IXZ), with most bulk supplies arriving by sea from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam, so forwarders cannot book against CBD today.
