## Description

Opened in 1948 and named after Argentine aviation pioneer Vicente Almandos Almonacid, this airport (IRJ/SANL) is the air link for the province of La Rioja and handled roughly 73,000 passengers in 2024. Aerolíneas Argentinas serves Buenos Aires-Aeroparque and Catamarca from here, so consignments move as belly cargo in those passenger aircraft. There is no confirmed dedicated freight terminal, freighter operation or air-cargo customs office on site. The province's exports — olives and olive oil, walnuts, wine from the Chilecito valleys and mining output — leave Argentina almost entirely by road, either to the ports or to the country's main air-freight points. Air shipments are therefore normally handled at Buenos Aires-Ezeiza (EZE), which processes the bulk of Argentine export tonnage, with Córdoba (COR) roughly 400 road kilometres to the east as the closer regional option. The site sits a few kilometres north-east of the provincial capital and is run by the concession operator Aeropuertos Argentina.
