## Description

Trujillo's airport is being rebuilt around cargo it does not yet handle. Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos International (IATA TRU, ICAO SPRU), serving the capital of Peru's La Libertad region, entered a 701.5 million dollar expansion programme in 2026, of which roughly 276 million is earmarked for a new cargo terminal; the completed airport is designed for 100,000 tonnes of freight and eight million passengers a year. Until then TRU remains a regional field without dedicated freight infrastructure, moving what cargo it carries in the bellies of domestic flights to Lima, with no on-site cold chain for exports. That matters locally, because La Libertad — irrigated by the Chavimochic scheme — is one of Peru's agricultural export heartlands for asparagus, blueberries and avocados, goods that today leave through Lima Jorge Chávez (LIM) some 560 kilometres south by refrigerated air freight, or as reefer sea freight via the ports of Salaverry and Callao. Chiclayo (CIX), about 200 kilometres north, is the other northern option. The Panamericana Norte carries the trucking legs, and the port of Salaverry sits just outside the city, making sea-air combinations a natural fit.
