## Description

One coral runway of about 6,230 ft (1,900 m), a lagoon bridge and a handful of buildings: that is the whole of Kanton Airport (IATA: CIS, ICAO: PCIS) on Abariringa atoll in Kiribati's Phoenix Islands. No airline serves it on a scheduled basis; access depends on irregular charter and government flights from Tarawa (TRW). With fewer than a hundred residents, no freight terminal, no ground handling and no permanent customs presence, the atoll has no role in goods traffic, and supplies arrive almost entirely by ship. Kiribati has for several years pursued rehabilitation of the airstrip and the lagoon bridge to allow domestic services and niche tourism; the feasibility study was funded by a Chinese government grant, which drew considerable international attention, but no confirmed construction work or reopening date exists. Air freight for Kiribati moves through Bonriki International at Tarawa (TRW), with Nadi in Fiji (NAN) and Honolulu (HNL) as the upstream transfer points. The surrounding Phoenix Islands Protected Area remains a UNESCO World Heritage site but has been open to commercial fishing again since 2023.
