## Description

Better known as Afonsos Air Force Base, Campo Délio Jardim de Mattos (ICAO SBAF) lies in the Marechal Hermes district of Rio de Janeiro and carries the official name of a former base commander and air force minister. The airfield opened on 12 December 1912 and is regarded as the birthplace of Brazilian aviation; today the Brazilian Air Force runs it with a runway of roughly 2,000 metres, hosts the air force university and the Museu Aeroespacial, and since January 2017 has kept no permanently assigned flying units, serving instead as a support site for air force, navy and army aviation. For logistics that means no scheduled services, no cargo terminal, no handling agents and no customs post for commercial goods. Air freight for greater Rio de Janeiro is processed at Galeão / Tom Jobim International (GIG), the city's cargo airport with customs and freighter handling, while Santos Dumont (SDU) is passenger-only. For high-volume shipments or wider route choice, Brazilian shippers often use Viracopos in Campinas (VCP), the country's largest cargo airport, around 400 road kilometres away.
