## Description

India's Navy operates the air station INS Baaz at Campbell Bay on Great Nicobar, at the southern end of the Andaman and Nicobar chain, with a runway of roughly 1,372 metres. Its purpose is strategic rather than commercial: the site overlooks the western approaches to the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest chokepoints in world trade. There are no scheduled civil flights, no cargo handling, no handling agents and no customs post for commercial goods, and supplies for the island arrive overwhelmingly by sea. In June 2026 the Indian government dropped the plan to extend the INS Baaz runway to around 3,000 metres and instead approved a roughly 13,000-crore-rupee greenfield dual-use airport at Chingen near Galathea Bay, citing terrain, environmental constraints and the impact on tribal settlements; completion is expected in about five years. Until then Port Blair Veer Savarkar (IXZ) remains the territory's only meaningful air cargo access point, connecting onward to Chennai (MAA) and Kolkata (CCU) on the mainland.
