## Description

Europe's only F-35 final assembly line stands at Cameri (LIMN) near Novara, an Italian Air Force base rather than a commercial airport. Leonardo operates the FACO facility there together with Lockheed Martin across more than 500,000 square metres, producing wings and fuselage sections and, since 2022, running a European maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade centre that has serviced Norwegian and US Air Force aircraft; assembly covers Italian and Dutch jets and is set to include Swiss and Czech aircraft. There is no civil scheduled traffic, no cargo terminal and no customs post for commercial goods, and the only freight movements are programme-related aerospace material. Air cargo from Piedmont is handled at Milan Malpensa (MXP), around 25 km west via the A4 and A26 and Italy's largest freight airport with full freighter operations and customs clearance. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is the practical alternative for express and overnight consignments, and most industrial shippers around Novara truck their goods to one of the two.
