## Description

Early mornings at Calicut International Airport see boxes of fresh seafood, curry leaves and spices rolling toward Gulf-bound aircraft — belly cargo for the huge Kerala diaspora markets in Dubai, Sharjah, Doha and Riyadh. Located at Karipur, about 28 kilometres from Kozhikode, CCJ is one of Kerala's three international airports and a lifeline for the region's small and mid-sized exporters of spices, seafood and handicrafts. Cold-chain facilities support perishables exports, the airport's freight specialty. Its tabletop runway on a hilltop plateau restricts large freighter operations, so heavy or outsize cargo is generally routed via Kochi (COK), some 180 kilometres south. For standard belly cargo to the Gulf, however, CCJ remains northern Kerala's first port of call.
