## Description

Cabo Rojo (CBJ / MDCR) is a tourism project with a runway attached rather than a freight facility, and the Dominican Republic's newest airport is still a construction site near Pedernales in the far south-west. Spanish contractor ACCIONA began work on the airfield in March 2024, and by May 2026 the 3,100 by 45 metre runway had entered asphalt paving with roughly 70 per cent of runway and apron work complete. First aircraft are expected in February 2027 and commercial opening is indicated for July 2027, timed to the first hotels of the state-backed Pedernales tourism development. The terminal is sized for 250,000 passengers a year initially and around one million in the longer term, while the runway is dimensioned for wide-body aircraft. No cargo terminal is planned, so air freight for the region continues to move through Las Américas (SDQ) near Santo Domingo, with María Montez (BRX) at Barahona the nearest other commercial field. Cabo Rojo's port, once the export point for Alcoa's bauxite, now works as a cruise terminal instead of a general cargo berth.
