## Description

A 25,500-square-metre terminal opened at Buriram Airport (IATA: BFV, ICAO: VTUO) in early 2026, sized for up to 1,000 passengers an hour and 2.8 million a year and built to take international as well as domestic traffic — an unusually large investment for a provincial airport in Thailand's north-eastern Isan region. The traffic behind it is largely sport-driven: the Chang International Circuit, host of the MotoGP Grand Prix of Thailand, and the Buriram United football club filled more than 120 flights and moved over 20,000 travellers through the airport across the 2026 race weekend, within a 2025 total of 241,946 passengers, up almost 16 per cent year on year. Despite the new building, no scheduled international services operate, and as of January 2026 Thai AirAsia was the only carrier serving the airport, essentially on Bangkok routes. No dedicated cargo terminal, freighter operation or standing air-cargo customs facility is documented at BFV; the limited air freight that moves does so as belly cargo on domestic flights. Exporters and importers in the province therefore truck consignments roughly 400 kilometres to Bangkok along Highway 24 and the Mittraphap Highway (Route 2), where Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the international freight gateway and Don Mueang (DMK) handles express and domestic volumes. Ubon Ratchathani (UBP) is the nearest alternative airport for eastern Isan, while ocean-freight consignments run to the port of Laem Chabang.
