## Description

From 23 May 2026 no scheduled aircraft could use Bunia Airport (BUX, FZKA) for about ten days: Congolese authorities suspended commercial traffic during an Ebola outbreak in Ituri and cleared only medical and humanitarian movements, among them a WHO-chartered flight from Nairobi with roughly five tonnes of supplies. Service resumed after the closure, and the field remains the main air access to a province where armed groups keep road travel risky. A USD 48 million rebuild by contractor Mont Gabaon SARLU under the state coordination office BCECO, started in June 2022, lengthened the runway to 2,500 m and added a 3,500 m² terminal, a wider apron and a new control tower; Congolese reporting in early 2026 described the field as ready for jet operations, though the intended international status is not confirmed. Freight here is overwhelmingly relief and military: MONUSCO C-130 rotations, WFP and UNHCR consignments for displaced people, with no documented commercial cargo terminal or bonded warehouse. Purely commercial shipments therefore travel as belly load or route through Kinshasa-Ndjili (FIH) some 1,800 km west, or Entebbe (EBB) in Uganda about 300 km away as the crow flies. Poor surface links even forced the airport project to import construction aggregate from Uganda.
