## Description

Set about 30 km north of Bukavu at some 1,720 m above sea level, Kavumu Airport (BKY) serves South Kivu province on the shoulder of Lake Kivu. Its runway carries regional scheduled and relief flights into the troubled east of the DR Congo, but there is no commercial cargo terminal. Air freight and aid supplies are usually handled through the regional centre at Goma (GOM) or via Kinshasa. The surrounding coltan and mining belt ships most of its goods by road toward Bukavu and the Lake Kivu ports.
