## Description

Kavumu Airport (BKY / FZMA) is a runway without a working air service: the field 30 km north of Bukavu has been shut to civil and humanitarian traffic since AFC/M23 forces took it in February 2025. Control of the site was contested again in October 2025, when Wazalendo militia and Congolese army units briefly pushed the rebels off the airfield. In March 2026 MONUSCO asked the UN Security Council to press for the reopening of both Kavumu and Goma, since peacekeepers and aid agencies currently have no usable airhead in the Kivus. Even before the war Kavumu had no freight terminal, so cargo travelled as belly load on small turboprops and dedicated freighter services are not documented. Shippers serving South Kivu therefore route through Kigali (KGL), roughly 220 road km away via the Rusizi border, or Bujumbura (BJM), about 150 km south through Uvira. No official passenger or tonnage statistics are published for the airport, and current customs handling on site is unconfirmed.
