## Description

With Aropa Airport at Kieta (KIE) cut back to a 365 m usable runway for construction stages running from May to at least September 2026, Buka Airport (IATA: BUA, ICAO: AYBK) carries the scheduled air traffic of Papua New Guinea's Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Air Niugini serves it daily from Port Moresby (POM, some 930 km) and from Rabaul-Tokua (RAB, about 280 km), with PNG Air adding capacity; equipment is turboprop. There is no dedicated cargo terminal and no confirmed freighter service, so shipments travel as belly load, typically a few hundred kilogrammes per flight. Operations are domestic, and customs formalities for imports and exports are completed at Port Moresby. On the ground, the Buka Passage, a few hundred metres of water, separates the island from mainland Bougainville: ferries and small boats take trucks and goods across before the coastal road south towards Arawa and Kieta, a run of several hours.
