## Description

Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, Uganda Airlines and Air Tanzania serve Bujumbura's Melchior Ndadaye, joined on the freight side by the dedicated cargo operator Astral Aviation. As Burundi's only international airport and its only paved runway, it is the unavoidable point of entry for the landlocked country's air cargo. Ground handling and the roughly 2,000 m² of storage are managed solely by the state agency SOBUGEA. With no railway and no coastline, heavier consignments move onward by truck along the corridors to Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, while the lake port on Tanganyika handles regional water transport. A Sino-Burundian modernisation programme launched in August 2024 is extending the runway and adding a new control tower.
