## Description

Belgium's second-busiest passenger airport is only a modest freight location: Brussels South Charleroi (CRL/EBCI) served about 10.5 million passengers in 2024 but moved roughly 32,000 tonnes of cargo in 2023. Low-cost carriers dominate, with Ryanair accounting for around 80 percent of movements and Wizz Air basing four aircraft there. Freight is mainly belly cargo in passenger aircraft, supported by a small dedicated cargo area; regular freighter operations are not part of the picture. The Walloon environmental permit under the 2024–2028 airport contract caps annual movements at 120,000, which limits any large expansion of air cargo. Road feeder services on the A54 and E42 reach Brussels in about 55 kilometres and Liege in a little over 100. Shippers with real air freight volumes therefore use Liege (LGG), Belgium's freighter base, or Brussels Airport (BRU), which handled around 795,000 tonnes in 2025. As an EU location, customs clearance applies only to goods from outside the Union.
