## Description

Named after Navy aviator Commander Melville S. Brown, killed in a 1936 crash, Brown Field Municipal Airport (IATA: SDM, ICAO: KSDM) sits on Otay Mesa about 21 km south-east of downtown San Diego, within sight of the Mexican border. It is a general-aviation reliever and the principal customs port of entry for private flights arriving on the US West Coast, with a Customs and Border Protection general-aviation inspection facility and roughly 80,000 movements a year. There is no scheduled or regular cargo service: the border region's freight crosses by truck at the Otay Mesa port of entry a few kilometres west, or flies from Tijuana (TIJ), reachable directly via the CBX cross-border bridge. A redevelopment begun in 2024, the 'San Diego Airpark' on about 134 hectares, is set to deliver its first buildings and a new GA customs facility by the end of 2025.
