## Description

Russian Post freighters are the cargo story at Bratsk Airport (IATA: BTK, ICAO: UIBB), a Siberian field that handled 246,117 passengers in 2025, roughly five per cent more than the year before. Sitting about 8 km north of the industrial city on the Bratsk Reservoir, it is the second-busiest airport in Irkutsk Oblast after Irkutsk itself, with 4,342 aircraft movements in 2025 and Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Moscow as its leading routes. No international scheduled freight service exists: since July 2025 the airport has handled Russian Post cargo flights and serves aircraft bound for the north and the Far East as a refuelling and technical stop, with belly capacity on domestic flights covering the remainder. The region's heavy exports — aluminium from the RUSAL smelter plus pulp and timber — leave by the Baikal-Amur Mainline and the Trans-Siberian Railway, backed by the A331 highway to Irkutsk some 600 road kilometres away. For Western shippers the airport has been effectively out of reach since 2022: the EU, the UK and the US closed their airspace to Russian carriers, DHL, FedEx and UPS suspended services to Russia, and payment sanctions plus dual-use export controls complicate customs handling of anything that remains. Airside reconstruction is in its second phase, due for completion in 2026 and to be followed by an upgrade of the passenger terminal. Air freight for eastern Siberia is normally routed through Irkutsk (IATA: IKT), about 500 km southeast, or Krasnoyarsk Yemelyanovo (IATA: KJA), a similar distance west and Siberia's main cargo hub.
