## Description

Few airfields in North America have operated longer: Bowman Field has seen continuous flying since the early 1920s, and Louisville's in-town airport (IATA LOU, ICAO KLOU) still uses its Art Deco terminal. It serves general aviation only — flight schools, charter, corporate and private aircraft, plus air ambulance work — with no scheduled service, no based freight carrier, no cargo terminal and no customs post of its own. The freight story sits about ten kilometres south at Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF), home of the UPS Worldport sorting hub, which processes roughly two million packages a day and sees more than 300 flights on peak days. SDF handled 7.49 billion pounds of cargo in 2025, some 3.4 million tonnes and 13 per cent more than the year before, and by early 2026 Worldport had passed FedEx's Memphis operation in daily flights and tonnage capacity as an express hub. Shippers in Louisville therefore book through SDF, with Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG) and its Amazon Air hub about ninety minutes north-east as the obvious alternative. For forwarders, LOU is a general aviation field with no handling role.
