## Description

On the Yamal Peninsula above the Arctic Circle, near 70 degrees north, Bovanenkovo Airport (IATA BVJ, ICAO USDB) flies shift workers, equipment and mail to one of Russia's largest gas fields. Opened by Gazprom in 2012, it is a closed industrial company airport supporting development of the Bovanenkovo field rather than a public gateway. Rated Class B under Russian rules, it can accept helicopters, larger airliners and freighter aircraft, but cargo here moves solely for gas production, never for the open market. Independent shippers have no access, and since 2022 Western sanctions against Russia together with reciprocal airspace closures mean consignments from the EU, Switzerland or the United States into a Gazprom development project are generally neither bookable nor permissible for European forwarders. Traffic that is legally possible moves through Gazprom's own supply chain or via Salekhard (SLY), the nearest civil airport. On the ground the Obskaya–Bovanenkovo company railway, among the world's northernmost, is the only through land link.
