## Description

Unlike a commercial gateway, Boufarik (ICAO DAAK) is the home base of the Algerian Air Force's air transport fleet, set on the fertile Mitidja plain around 30 kilometres southwest of Algiers. Units based here include the 2ème Escadre de Transport Tactique et Logistique operating C-130H and C-130H-30 Hercules, alongside heavier Ilyushin Il-76MD and Il-76TD airlifters. The field carries no IATA code and is closed to scheduled commercial and freight traffic; no civilian cargo is processed or cleared here. The base drew international attention in 2018 when an air force Il-76 crashed shortly after take-off, still Algeria's deadliest aviation accident. Shippers in the Algiers area rely on Houari Boumediene International (ALG) roughly 40 kilometres east, which concentrates the region's freight terminals and customs handling. Motorways across the Mitidja give the plain good road links to the capital and its seaport.
