## Description

The world's largest cargo aircraft, the Antonov An-225 «Mriya», was destroyed just a few kilometres from here in the opening days of the war – a grim emblem of what February 2022 did to Ukrainian aviation. Boryspil International Airport (IATA: KBP, ICAO: UKBB), some 29 kilometres east of Kyiv, was the country's dominant gateway with over 15 million passengers a year and the hub of Ukraine International Airlines before all civilian traffic ceased on 24 February 2022; Ukrainian airspace has been fully closed ever since. For freight professionals the operating reality is land-based: air cargo for Kyiv, Kharkiv or Dnipro flies into Rzeszów, Warsaw, Katowice or Budapest and continues by truck across the Polish border, with EU customs clearance at the point of entry and border waiting times to be factored into every quotation. The airport's two runways and cargo terminal remain largely intact. Since March 2026 a government working group has been preparing a phased reopening of the airspace – Lviv is expected to go first, with Boryspil to follow, though no binding timeline exists; Latvia's airBaltic was the first foreign carrier to declare itself ready to return. Until that day, KBP stands ready and silent.
