## Description

A USD 500 million programme called Future LEX, unveiled in May 2026, will rebuild much of Blue Grass Airport in Lexington (IATA: LEX, ICAO: KLEX) after its record year of 1,614,053 passengers in 2025 — but dedicated freight capacity is not part of it. The first five years cover a new eight-gate concourse, 815 extra long-term parking spaces, a relocated and enlarged rental car facility, more fuel storage and ramp space, and a relocated US Customs facility for international passengers, backed by USD 24.9 million from the Commonwealth of Kentucky and USD 5 million in federal funding. American, Delta, United and Allegiant serve the field, with Delta having restored year-round service to New York LaGuardia. The airport's distinctive traffic is equine: specialised horse charters land for the Keeneland Thoroughbred sales, the largest in the world, with the racecourse directly opposite the terminal. Otherwise air cargo is confined to small belly volumes on regional aircraft; there is no freighter terminal. Forwarders route shipments through Louisville (SDF) with the UPS Worldport or Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG) with the DHL hub, each a good hour away by road feeder service.
