## Description

Named for Otto von Bismarck in a bid to attract German railway capital, North Dakota's capital still shows that origin: a government and rail town rather than a freight centre. Its airport, Bismarck Municipal (BIS/KBIS), posted a record 2025 with more than 309,000 departing passengers on services to Denver, Minneapolis and other connecting points. The city has since approved a roughly $132 million terminal expansion — two additional boarding bridges, more screening and baggage capacity — with design work in 2026, phased construction from late 2027 or 2028 and completion targeted for 2030. Cargo is unaffected by that: there is no dedicated freight terminal, shipments are worked on the ramp shared with general aviation, and volumes are confined to integrator feeder and passenger-belly loads, around 11,000 pounds outbound and 28,000 inbound in 2019. Forwarded consignments are consolidated instead at Hector International in Fargo (Foreign-Trade Zone 267, CBP port of entry), about three hours east on Interstate 94.
