## Description

A cargo terminal built in 2017 and sized for about 50 tonnes a day forms the freight backbone of Birsa Munda Airport (IXR/VERC) in Ranchi, capital of Jharkhand. Since February 2024, ground handler AISATS has run domestic cargo operations here in partnership with AAICLAS, acting as the airport's regulated agent with X-ray screening and explosive trace detection on site; the integrated passenger terminal opened in 2013 covers some 19,600 square metres. Outbound volumes reflect the region's mining and heavy-industry profile, while inbound flows include e-commerce and pharmaceuticals for the growing state capital. Although the terminal is equipped to process international passengers, no regular international service operates, so export and import consignments are routed via Kolkata (CCU) or Delhi (DEL). The Airports Authority of India has been pursuing an expansion since 2022, including land transfer and a planned runway extension to about 3,655 metres that would allow larger aircraft and more belly capacity, though no completion date is confirmed. IndiGo and Air India connect the city with Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
