A new international air-cargo building — roughly 53,500 square feet, opened in June 2024 at a cost of 31 million dollars — gives Birmingham-Shuttlesworth (BHM/KBHM) room to grow its freight business, and a further facility of about 27 million dollars is being built for Kuehne+Nagel. FedEx Express flies a Boeing 757-200F to Memphis on weekdays, UPS Airlines runs 767-300F and A300-600F service to Louisville, and Kuehne+Nagel operates twice-weekly Atlas Air 747-8F freighters from Stuttgart, feeding the Mercedes-Benz plant at Vance and central Alabama's wider automotive cluster. The airport handled about 25,446 tonnes of freight in 2024 alongside more than three million passengers, making it Alabama's busiest passenger airport. Named for civil-rights leader Fred Shuttlesworth, it sits where Interstates 20, 59 and 65 converge, with Norfolk Southern and CSX on the rail side, so trucked road feeder services reach much of the Southeast.
