## Description

Set on the old Silk Road in eastern Iran, Birjand is the capital of South Khorasan, a province famed for saffron, barberry and hand-woven textiles. Birjand International Airport (XBJ/OIMB) opened as early as 1933 as one of Iran's first commercial airfields and today links the city mainly with Tehran and Mashhad; it has held international status since its first overseas flight to Medina in June 2008, a service that still means pilgrimage traffic above all.
