On a clear summer evening the pattern hums with Super Cubs and Cessnas, Knik Arm glinting beyond the threshold. Birchwood Airport (ICAO PABV, FAA identifier BCV, no IATA code) in Chugiak, off the Glenn Highway northeast of Anchorage, is a state-run general aviation reliever that keeps training, floatplane work, skydiving and private flying out of the city's busier airspace.
