## Description

Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines anchor traffic at Biratnagar (BIR/VNVT), flying several times a day to Kathmandu and accepting domestic parcels and general cargo at their counters here. The field sits about five kilometres from Biratnagar in the Morang district, the commercial centre of eastern Nepal close to the Indian border crossing at Jogbani. There is no dedicated cargo terminal, no international freight service and no air-cargo customs post; scheduled exports and imports are consolidated through the Tribhuvan (KTM) freight complex in Kathmandu, or move overland to Kolkata. Nepal's civil aviation authority has long planned to raise the airport to regional international standard, extending the roughly 1,500-metre runway to 2,500 metres and adding a new terminal, with land acquisition under way but no confirmed completion date. Only that extension would allow narrow-body jets such as the A320 or 737, and with them meaningful belly capacity. Until then BIR remains eastern Nepal's principal passenger feeder, with real air freight handled in Kathmandu.
