It is the busiest cargo airport in Montana, handling roughly 73.5 million pounds, about 33,300 tonnes, in 2025. FedEx Express operates several freighter rotations a day, UPS Airlines adds its own capacity, and Alpine Air Express and Richland Aviation fly the feeder legs; a project worth some 7.5 million dollars is adding a fifth cargo pad so another carrier can be accommodated. Billings sits where Interstate 90 meets Interstate 94 with the BNSF main line through town, which makes it the supply centre for eastern Montana and northern Wyoming and the staging point for traffic into the Bakken oil field. Three refineries in the city give the freight base an industrial character beyond retail and express volumes. Because the airport works essentially domestic traffic, bonded and international consignments are normally routed through the Great Falls Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ 88) or eastward via Denver (FTZ 123).
