## Description

SMAEABAB, the joint municipal authority formed by Biarritz, Anglet and Bayonne, runs Biarritz Pays Basque Airport (BIQ/LFBZ) as a leisure-driven passenger gateway rather than a freight facility: 969,988 travellers passed through in 2025, up 2.6 percent, with international traffic rising 16.4 percent. Whatever cargo leaves BIQ does so as belly capacity on holiday flights; there is no cargo terminal, no freighter handling and no confirmed dedicated air cargo customs office on site. The surface network carries the real volumes instead – the A63 along the Bordeaux–Irun corridor is one of Europe's busiest lorry axes, the Hendaye/Irun rail interface manages the gauge change into Spain, and the port of Bayonne lies just a few kilometres from the apron. Forwarders in the French Basque Country tender air shipments at Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD), roughly 180 km north, or Pau-Pyrénées (PUF), some 110 km east. Larger consignments and express traffic move to Vitoria (VIT) in Spain, which DHL uses as its South-West Europe transhipment base. From 28 June 2026 Volotea adds a twice-weekly Biarritz–Lille link offering more than 7,500 summer seats.
