## Description

The airfield at Bentiu, in Rubkona in South Sudan's Unity State, is not a commercial cargo station but a humanitarian lifeline: its unpaved strip, historically about 1,300 by 23 metres and since upgraded by UNMISS, is the main route for relief supplies reaching protection sites housing tens of thousands of displaced people. In the rainy season only helicopters can operate at times, and even in the dry season payloads have been limited to a few tonnes per flight; there is no cargo terminal, handling agent or customs post. Commercial air freight and all clearance go through Juba (JUB), the country's only international gateway.
