## Description

Eastern Libya's principal air gateway is Benina (BEN), 19 km from Benghazi, the country's second city. Renovated terminal and runway works have lifted capacity to around 2 million passengers and some 15,000 tonnes of cargo a year, making it the second-busiest field in Libya after Tripoli. Scheduled carriers include Libyan Airlines, Buraq Air, Afriqiyah Airways, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines and Royal Jordanian, with Benina serving as the secondary base of both Libyan Airlines and Buraq Air. Ground handling is rated for large freighters up to the Antonov An-124 and Boeing 747F, so heavy and oversized consignments can be accommodated. Freight is mostly inbound goods for the east, oil-sector and industrial cargo and humanitarian supplies, cleared through on-site customs. Onward distribution is entirely by road along the coastal highway, as Libya has no railways. For forwarders, BEN is the key cargo access point for Cyrenaica, complementing Tripoli's Mitiga in the west.
