## Description

A 3,450-metre runway in the middle of the sparsely populated Alentejo: Beja (BYJ) is a special case among Portugal's airports. The Força Aérea Portuguesa base served the German Air Force as a training site until the 1990s; a civilian terminal followed in 2011 but never attracted regular scheduled traffic. Today, alongside military operations, the field is used mainly for long-term aircraft storage and maintenance — at times even A380s were parked here. There is no freight traffic; cargo from the Alentejo is routed via Lisbon (LIS, approx. 180 km) or Faro (FAO).
