## Description

Portugal has few airports with a 3,450-metre runway and almost no traffic on it — Beja (BYJ/LPBJ) is one of them. The Força Aérea Portuguesa base served the German Air Force as a training site until the 1990s; the Terminal Civil de Beja opened the field to civil traffic in 2011, but scheduled services never followed. Today, alongside military operations, the airport is used mainly for long-term aircraft storage, maintenance and business aviation, supported by handlers such as ExecuJet and Universal Aviation; A380s have been parked here at times. Runway length and spare apron space make Beja technically suitable for freighters, yet there is no scheduled cargo service and no permanent cargo customs desk — only pre-arranged ad-hoc charters. Regular air freight from the Alentejo is therefore trucked to Lisbon (LIS, about 180 km via the A2 motorway) or south to Faro (FAO), where clearance also takes place. Ongoing expansion of maintenance hangars and logistics space keeps a larger freight role on the table.
