## Description

Without this gravel strip, nothing reaches the village in summer: Bearskin Lake Airport (XBE) is the only year-round access to the Oji-Cree community of Bearskin Lake on Michikan Lake, roughly 425 km north of Sioux Lookout in north-western Ontario. Built for small propeller aircraft, it keeps the community supplied with mail, groceries and medicines and handles medical evacuations, with North Star Air among the carriers serving it. There is no cargo terminal, no customs post and no freighter operation in the conventional sense — air freight here means small-aircraft resupply, and it is correspondingly expensive. Heavy and bulky goods, fuel and building materials therefore travel on the seasonal winter road, passable only a few weeks each year. Sioux Lookout (YXL) is the regional transfer point, with larger volumes moving via Thunder Bay (YQT) or Winnipeg (YWG).
