## Description

A single upgraded runway, a modest terminal and roughly 124 flight movements a month define Batticaloa Airport (BTC/VCCB), designated Sri Lanka's fifth international airport in 2019 but in practice a regional airport for the Eastern Province with no meaningful air cargo throughput. Cinnamon Air currently operates the only scheduled services, linking Batticaloa with Colombo and Weerawila; freight can travel only in small quantities as belly cargo aboard these light aircraft. Runway and terminal capacity have been expanded in recent years to allow later growth in passenger and cargo volumes, but no dedicated freight terminal or regular freighter operation is confirmed, and there are currently no international scheduled flights. Exporters in the Eastern Province, notably in fisheries and seafood processing, therefore route temperature-controlled shipments almost exclusively through Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo, some 300 road kilometres west, where perishables handling and Sri Lankan customs clearance are concentrated. Where volume matters more than speed, the seaport of Trincomalee about 140 kilometres north offers a multimodal alternative. The road link from Batticaloa to Colombo via the A5 and A4 is usable year-round but should be planned with six to eight hours of driving time.
